Independent living exhibition to help make life easier in the home

An exhibition aimed at making life easier in the home for people with disabilities and older people has been organised by Cheshire East Council and its partners.

The independent living exhibition will take place on Wednesday November 9th at Tenants Hall in Tatton Park, allowing visitors to view and try out equipment that can help people live more independently at home.

The last event, in September, succeeded in helping many carers and families in difficult circumstances to find suitable methods to make life a little easier.

Jan Taylor, of Wilmslow, whose 12-year-old son Sam has cerebral palsy, recommends a visit to the exhibition after a positive experience of her own.

She said: "Thanks to the assistance of the independent living team, we have been able to find new equipment for Sam which has helped us no end, and has made life easier.

"Sam enjoys his bath but getting him in and out was difficult. But we now have a hoist to help him and a new specialised toilet seat.

"I would recommend a visit to the exhibition because looking for new and relevant equipment is something my family will have to do more of as Sam grows up and his needs change."

More than 30 exhibitors will be on hand during the event, from 10am until 7pm, to offer products and advice.

Visitors will also be able to get help on such topics as concessionary travel and blue badges, as well as advice from representatives from Housing Benefits, and organisations like the Red Cross and Age UK.

Councillor Roland Domleo, Cabinet member with responsibility for adult services, said: "This exhibition will have something for everyone, both young and old, and offers them a unique chance to witness first hand some of the products on the market.

"Many people struggle on with day-to-day situations that could be helped with a piece of equipment or help from the independent living team. This could be from struggling to open a tin of food to getting in and out of bed.

"Some of the exhibitors could have a simple solution to all manner of situations and could make a world of difference to people."

There will be free parking and entry to this event, where there will also be a grand raffle, children's entertainer (after school hours) and a visit from an aromatherapist in the early evening.

Free transport may be available by calling Community Outreach Transport on 01565 682308.
