Celebrating the apple at Quarry Bank Mill

Enjoy a fruity weekend at Quarry Bank Mill 's autumn fair c National Trust

Apples will be high on the edible agenda at Quarry Bank Mill's Autumn Fair on 1st and 2nd October.

As autumn makes its presence felt, Dot Wilson, head gardener in the Apprentice House garden, is looking forward to a busy season.

"October is when we start collecting seeds from the garden, planting garlic, sowing lettuce in frames, earthing up leeks and dividing rhubarb" says Dot.

"We also have lots of apples and other fruit from the orchard – so we'll be running juicing and tasting sessions, giving advice and information about growing apples, and there'll also be apples for sale. It's a fantastic opportunity for our visitors to see what we produce here – and maybe take home some ideas for their own garden."

Meanwhile, Ros Stone, Quarry Bank's Visitor Experience Manager, is finalising the Autumn apple trail. "This year, the trail will wend its way through several orchards in and around Styal Village" says Ros. "The shop is stocking up on delicious local preserves – all made in Cheshire, and the Mill restaurant is putting the finishing touches to its Apple menus for the weekend.

"We've also got apple pressing and apple bobbing – and on Sunday 2nd October we're delighted to welcome Robert Owen Brown, the Executive Head Chef at The Mark Addy in Manchester, to Quarry Bank Mill. He'll be giving food tasting and demonstrations from recipe's in his 'A Taste of Modern History' recipe book – which will include 'Lobscause' – a dish which would have been traditionally eaten at Quarry Bank Mill by the mill workers".

Quarry Bank Mill's Autumn Fair weekend takes place on Saturday 1st to Sunday 2nd October from 11am until 4pm. For more information go to www.nationaltrust.org.uk/events or call the Infoline on 01625 445896.
