Gasworks mean single lane closure of Alderley Road

Last week we reported that essential gas works will be commencing in Wilmslow town centre on Monday, 25th July.

These works are being carried out by National Grid to replace an old metal gas mains from under the access road outside number 39 Alderley Road.

At the time, a spokeswoman from National Grid said "We will have temporary traffic lights in operation, but as these are not controlling traffic on the main road, there shouldn't be too many delays. The works also coincide with the start of the school holidays and so should have very little impact on commuter traffic."

Having noticed yesterday that one lane of Alderley Road was closed, causing considerable tailbacks, I contacted a spokeswoman from National Grid for an update on the situation.

She said "It is necessary to carry out works on both sides of the main road, so for the safety of our workforce and road users, temporary traffic lights are in operation.

"This work is essential to provide the area with a continued safe and secure gas supply. However, we know that this type of work can cause disruption and we are working hard to complete this as quickly and safely as we can. We will do everything we can to keep traffic moving while we are working, but we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"We anticipate that work will be complete by early next week."
