Scarecrow competition winners announced

The results of the 2011 Wilmslow Scarecrow Festival, which saw a colourful crop of over 100 scarecrows take to the streets of Wilmslow, have been announced.

The winner of the Best Business Scarecrow was Petit Delice with 'Watching the World Go By', in second place was MultiYork 'Draped in Finery' and third place went to Shentons "A Farmers Work is Never Done'.

Wilmslow Preparatory School won the Best School's Scarecrow with 'Joseph', 'Afternoon Tea' created by St Anne's Fulshaw Primary School was second and in third place was Wilmslow High School's 'Jack Sparrow' scarecrow.

Rotarian and local businessman Geoff Shelmerdine, who originally came up with the idea to support local businesses and worthy causes in Wilmslow, said "Building on the success of our first event last year and with the addition of the schools, brownies and Methodist Chuch, this year attracted over 100 scarecrows displayed across the town. Hoopers generously devoting window space for the creative talents of some schools was a real bonus and a great attraction.

"Support from the business community is beginning to increase as they realise the marketing benefits of such an event and the impact it is having on the town. Competition has been high, imagination running wild and diy skills put to the test to create a kaleidoscope of ingenuity.

"After two weeks of great excitement spotting scarecrows, we finally arrived at the Saturday parade, and what a parade, we brought the town to a standstill. Rotary Robin and Rosie our two 12ft scarecrows had their first walkabout adding curiosity and bewilderment to the colour and rhythmic beat of the fantastic Lancaster Batala Drumming Band.

"Due to the very high standards of scarecrow entries, judging has required much deliberation, soundings from the public and reviewing photographs to arrive at the final awards. Many congratulations to those placed in both categories. Trophies will be presented to the winners at the Deanwater Hotel on Tuesday evening 19th July at 7.30pm.

"Sincere thanks from the President and members of the Wilmslow Dean Rotary Club to all those who took part and helped along the way to make this year such a great event. We are again indebted to our main sponsors, Hoopers and Sainsbury's (Wilmslow)."

"It has been hard work but great fun."
