The Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Mayor of Cheshire East attended a presentation at Wilmslow High School on Friday, July 1st, to mark the end of National School Sport Week (NSSW).

George Osborne and Councillor Roger West were joined by representatives from Cheshire Peaks and Plains Housing Trust, Lloyds TSB (sponsors of NSSW), Sport Cheshire, Cheshire East Children and Families and a whole host of sporting heroes.

Rosie Harris, from Macclesfield School Sport Partnership (SSP), said "The presentation was a celebration of all the activities we have delivered over the years and the culmination of National School Sport Week which was organised by the Young Ambassadors of Macclesfield SSP.

"We had a fabulous week with all the sporting champions who joined us throughout the week to help raise the SSP profile and celebrate the importance of physical activity and the 2012 legacy."

This year the Young Ambassadors of Macclesfield Organising Committee from Macclesfield School Sport Partnership have been working with Cheshire Peaks and Plains Housing Trust to help bring the community together, get people engaged with the 2012 Olympics and aware of the Olympic and Paralympic values of; excellence, friendship, respect, equality, courage, determination and inspiration.

During the Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week, from 27th June to 1st July, they toured Wilmslow, Poynton, Knutsford and Macclesfield visiting Sheltered Services and local schools with Olympic and Paralympic Champions, to hold gifted and talented workshops and showcase the work going on towards embracing the 2012 Olympics.

Nine top athletes took part in the week's activities, including; Chris Cook (Olympic Swimmer, Commonwealth Gold Medallist) Jenna Downing (World Champion In Line Skater), Neil Danns (ex British Champion and European Champion Skateboarder), Gail Emms (ex Olympic Badminton, Olympic Silver Medallist), Craig Heap (ex Olympic Gymnast and Commonwealth Silver Medallist), Nicola Minichiello (ex Olympic Bobsleigher and World Champion), Michelle Robinson (ex Olympic Triple Jumper), Tim Prendergast (New Zealand Parlaympian, Paralympic Gold and Silver Medallist) and Adam Whitehead (ex Olympic Swimmer, World Champion and Commonwealth Gold).

On their travels they also encouraged participation in the main event of Friday, an attempt to break the World Record for mass participation in a dance, which was performed at exactly 20 minutes to 12.

Rosie Harris explained "The majority of schools in the Macclesfield SSP participated in this attempt. Numbers are still coming in and we have broken the British Record so far with 82,000 participants."

George Osborne said "I was delighted to attend the presentation at Wilmslow High School organised by the Young Ambassadors from the Macclesfield Schools Sport Partnership. These young people have been chosen to promote the ethos and values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement amongst young people.

"The world champions and previous Olympic medallists who attended were clearly an inspiration to the Ambassadors and I was very impressed with everybody's enthusiasm building up to the 2012 Olympics."
