How will Wilmslow celebrate the Queen's Jubilee?

The Government have announced that there will be a special 4-day bank holiday for the Diamond Jubilee next year.

The 2012 late May bank holiday will be moved to Monday 4th June 2012 and an additional Jubilee bank holiday will be on Tuesday 5th June 2012.

Schools in England and Wales will be able to close on Tuesday 5th June 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and if a school is already closed on 5th June, for half term or another reason, it will be able to close on an alternative day.

Wilmslow resident Khumi Burton is already thinking about what should be done in the town to mark 60 years of the Queen's reign.

Khumi, organiser of the Wilmslow Bank Holiday Street Party and recent Royal Wedding Street Party, said "I have seen what the intentions are for June 2012 and I have my thinking cap on.

"It will be great if Wilmslow residents and organisation can celebrate streetwise or have a big do - as a community where everyone mucks in and has a jolly good celebration on one of the specific mentioned dates in June 2012.

"The venue should be either in The Carrs or an open space like Wilmslow High School's ground where a concert of various kinds can be held with picnic facilities."

Khumi added "I also think Churches Together should have a service of thanksgiving too as none of us are likely to experiece the Diamond Jubilee again."

Buckingham Palace will be co-ordinating a programme of events centred around the extended weekend. This will include a Big Jubilee Lunch, a Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the Thames, a concert at Buckingham Palace and the lighting of 2012 beacons throughout the United Kingdom. The Queen and other members of the Royal Family will also attend a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral.

The Department for Communities and Local Government has produced guidance to help communities celebrate the Diamond Jubilee by organising street parties and communities can apply to the Big Lottery Fund for funding for a local event through the Awards for All Scheme.

How about something similar to the celebrations held for Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897? a marching band plus members of the police and fire services and local school children from the centre of Wilmslow to the Common - maybe a good opportunity for the people to reclaim the Common for their enjoyment!
