Alderley Edge May Fair, Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra and Friends of The Carrs are just some of the events and organisations set to benefit from grant funding.

The first round of community grants for 2011 has been approved by Cheshire East Council and £16,662 is being distributed between 37 community and voluntary groups.

Grants are available to support community, environmental, sports, arts, heritage and play projects and awards in this latest round range from £76 to £1,760.

Applications are judged on a number of criteria and applicants should be able to display that their project: enhances the quality of life for Cheshire East residents; increases involvement in the community; demonstrates the potential to be sustained in the future; and that it can attract more participants. Only one grant can be awarded to each organisation per financial year.

Alderley Edge May Fair and Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra both received £250 towards their events which are considered important to Cheshire East district as they make a difference to local residents by enabling them to see local talent performing at reasonable prices.

Friends of The Carrs received £115 towards the purchase of a strimmer and equipment to undertake maintenance of the banks of the River Bollin in The Carrs. The total cost is £230 and the Friends are putting in 50% of the cost themselves.

Councillor David Brown, Cabinet member with responsibility for performance and capacity, said: "These grants show how Cheshire East Council is working with other groups to improve community life.

"In many cases these grants act as a catalyst for further funding opportunities and they represent excellent achievements for the organisations involved.

"Applying for a community grant is very easy to do and I hope that other groups will be encouraged to do so in the future."
