Conservative candidates Wesley Fitzgerald and Gary Barton have made it a clean sweep for the Conservatives in the Wilmslow local elections.

Both Tories were elected in the two seat Wilmslow West & Chorley ward with Gary Barton having received 2287 votes, Wesley Fitzgerald received 1860 and the Liberal Democratic candidate Craig Browne received 1311 votes.

Turnout at the local election was 45.6% and 126 votes were rejected.

Speaking after the result was announced, Gary Barton, 28, said " Obviously I am delighted, this part of Wilmslow is really my home. I went to Ashdene County Primary and I'm a Governor there so it is a genuine privilege to represent the part that means the most to me. It's fantastic."

Wesley Fitzgerald, Leader of Cheshire East Council told me "On the whole I'm very pleased. The Conservative Party remains the main representation of the people. Yes there have been one or turn ups shall we say. The Liberals have moved back, the Independents have come forward a bit but we remain dominant."

Speaking about the Wilmslow Parish Council election count tomorrow, Councillor Barton said "I am looking forward to tomorrow, there's so many candidates so it will be very interesting.

"I am really looking forward to the work we are going to be able to do with the Town Council working with Cheshire East, there's so much we can do together.

"I think the Town Council is going to be able to take up issues that Cheshire East hasn't been able to - getting that partnership is really going to mean a lot to Wilmslow."

Councillor Fitzgerald then confirmed he would be standing for the leadership of Cheshire East Council again at the Conservative Group AGM on Monday afternoon (May 9th).

There was no election in the Wilmslow East ward, it was uncontested so Councillor Rod Menlove took this seat.
