Join the royal celebration

With the Royal Wedding only three days away, plans are now being finalised for Wilmslow's Royal Wedding Street Party and everyone in the town is invited.

Organised by Khumi Burton and Wilmslow Business Group the traditional street party will take place on Grove Street this Friday, 29th April.

Grove Street will be decorated with bunting and it is hoped that the shops will join in the celebrations by decorating their windows, which many, including Hoopers have already done. All Wilmslow residents are welcome to come and join with their friends, neighbours and families by bringing their own picnics, bunting, tables, chairs and enjoying the entertainment.

Kicking off at 1pm, the event will be hosted by Imagine FM, with lots of entertainment for everyone and audience participation is most welcome. The crowds will be entertained by dances from North East India, including Manipuri dance, Bollywood dance and Bamboo dance by students from Manipur in India. Local dance groups will be participating and there will be a performance from Wilmslow Swing Singer Alan Burton.

Additional entertainment will include a balloon race organised by Wilmslow Dean Rotary Club and a bouncy castle at Bank Square. Refreshments will also be available from pancake and BBQ stalls and St. Bartholomews Church has kindly agreed to lend the organisers their trestle tables and chairs to accomodate about 150 people.

There will also be a competition to choose the best Kate and William look alike with fantastic prizes for the winners.

Khumi, organiser of the Wilmslow Bank Holiday Street Party and chairman of the Greater Manchester Branch of the Royal Society of St George, said "I am organising this event because I want to give back to the community and make a bit of a difference.

"I am very proud to be British, love England and will do anything to promote it. I am doing this not for myself but for the community so they can have a wonderful day. In our lifetime there won't be another wedding of this kind."

A video of the day will be made and kept for posterity at Wilmslow library, the Wilmslow Trust and Wilmslow Historical Society. The BBC are also considering filming the street party for their 6 o'clock news that day.

As the event falls within the Red Cross week proceeds will go to British Red Cross for the work they do in local communities.

If you would like to join the party, show off your talents on the day to entertain the crowds or come dressed as Kate or William, email Khumi or call her on 01625 548664.
