Plans are well underway to celebrate the Royal Wedding with a street party on Grove Street.

Wilmslow resident Khumi Burton is organising a traditional street party on Friday 29th April which is being partly funded by the Wilmslow Business Group.

Grove Street will be decorated with bunting and it is hoped that the shops will join in the celebrations by decorating their windows. Tables will be set up on Grove Street and all Wilmslow residents are being inviting to bring their own picnics and sit with their friends and family, with each street recognised by their own placard.

Khumi is also hoping that the Chancellor George Osborne and his family will attend, if they have not accepted an invitation to the wedding, along with a number of local celebrities. The BBC has also expressed an interest in filming the street party for their 6 o'clock news that day.

The party will kick off at 1pm with a whole variety of music and entertainment from local groups and Imagine FM.

Khumi, organiser of the Wilmslow Bank Holiday Street Party, said "I am organising this event because I want to give back to the community and make a bit of a difference.

"I am very proud to be British, love England and will do anything to promote it. I am doing this not for myself but for the community so they can have a wonderful day. In our lifetime there won't be another wedding of this kind.

"I also plan to make a video of the event which can be kept by Wilmslow library, Wilmslow Trust and Wilmslow Historical Society for posterity as we all know that this is a once in a lifetime event."

Khumi is asking for support from local groups, churches, schools and businesses to ensure that the street party is a huge success for Wilmslow. Waterstones have agreed to supply the electricity and she is hoping that local shops will be happy to lend two giant screens for the day.

Update: Plans for the Royal Wedding street party now include a Royal Table for those who wants to dress up as William and Kate.

Khumi will be asking local celebrities and dignitaries to judge the fancy dress competition and prizes will include a Champagne Afternoon Tea for 4 at the Stanneylands Hotel and lunch with a bottle of wine at Panacea in Alderley Edge.

Anyone interested in helping with the event in any way, or taking part in the fancy dress competition and sitting at the Royal Table should email Khumi or call her on 01625 548664.
