Souperday raises £1200

Harare Aids Orphanage

Wilmslow Wells for Africa held their first Souperday of the year on Thursday, 24th February at St John's Church Rooms.

The charity hold two Souperdays each year, and have a strong group of supporters who turn up every time to enjoy a selection of soups, bread and cakes - all of which are home-made. They were delighted with the success of this most recent event which raised just over £1200.

Helen Battilana, Chairman of Wilmslow Wells said "Although it is a little lower than the previous Souperday in October, is still a very good result and represents lots of hard work from our helpers and generous support from our customers."

Wilmslow Wells for Africa is a direct action charity which aims to improve life in drought-stricken areas of Africa by providing wells, pumps, dams and water collection equipment. The charity was started in the early 1980's by Brenda Mottershead, a local teacher who had returned from living for a few years in South Africa and was horrified by the difficulties people had in obtaining clean water - in many parts of Africa the only water available is so polluted that it kills both the humans and wildlife that have to share its source.

They keep administration costs to a minimum, more than 99% of everything they raise is pumped straight into water projects. Over 27 years, Wilmslow Wells have raised £743,000, undertaken over 135 projects (some involving multiple wells) and spent £6514 on running costs.

Helen said "We have already brought water to more than 100 villages, but so much more needs to be done."

The charity's next fund-raising event is their annual Barn Dance which will be held at Mottram St Andrew Village Hall on Saturday 2nd April.

Helen said "The caller, Brendan Morrison, is very experienced in explaining to dancers what to do and our Haycorn Band will provide super live music. This event is always popular and tickets are limited to 100, so please call soon if you would like to join us."

Tickets are priced £14 adults and £7 for under 16s. A hot-pot supper with dessert, is included in the ticket price. A vegetarian alternative can be pre-ordered. For tickets call 01625 250368.
