Appeal for witnesses following assault at traffic lights

Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault by a cyclist in Wilmslow town centre.

The incident occurred at 7.45 am on Thursday, 17th February, when a man was waiting by the traffic lights at the junction of Alderley Road and Station Road. A cyclist rode up alongside the car and the cyclist got off his bike accusing the driver of being too close to him.

He then proceeded to bang the bonnet of the aggrieved person's vehicle, who got out of the car to stop him. At this point the cyclist grabbed him by the throat swearing at him, and spat in his face. Witnesses came over and the aggrieved person got back in his vehicle and drove off.

Police are currently checking the town centre CCTV but they would also like to appeal to anyone with information, that may lead to the identification of the cyclist, to come forward.

Please get in touch with Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Although I can't condone this allegation, there are two sides to every story. Having been the victim of extrordinarily dangerous manoeuvres by motorists I can understand the frustration.

I would suggest to all cyclists that the safest position to cycle is not to hug the kerb. There are several reason for this.

Firstly, the area near the kerb contains drain covers, and usually any debris such as grime, litter, glass, etc. can be found there.

Secondly, if a motorist gets too close then you have nowhere to go other than into the kerb or into the vehicle. If you leave a gap away from the kerb then you help to discourage a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre and it also gives you somewhere to go if a motorist overtakes too close.
