Call for parish council candidates

As a result of the Community Governance Review, it was confirmed last year that Wilmslow Handforth and Styal are to have their own parish councils.

The Council reached its decision following two rounds of public consultations between May and September last year. Wilmslow will have fifteen councillors serve on their parish council, whilst Handforth and Styal will have seven councillors each.

Elections for the three new councils will be held simultaneously with the election for Cheshire East Councillors on May 5th 2011, and each councillor will serve a 4 year term of office.

Anyone who is interested in standing for election as a parish councillor for this area can attend a public meeting specifically convened for this purpose, by Cheshire East Council, with support from the Cheshire Association of Local Councils. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 1st at the Oakenclough Children's Centre on Colshaw Drive at 7.30pm.

Leader of Cheshire East Council, Wesley Fitzgerald, said: "This is an important time for Handforth, Styal and Wilmslow. This authority is always looking at ways to give the people of Cheshire East more choice and control over services and resources. The creation of these parish councils will allow elected parish members to be able make decisions on all manner of locally important services. The powers of parish councils can extend to the provision of allotments, bus shelters, verges and street lighting.

"Parish Councils can also get involved with the maintenance of community transport schemes, sports facilities and tourism – this is something all the new authorities will need to discuss. I believe they have a bright future as the voice-piece of the local community."

The Council have confirmed the following budgets and precepts for the new parish councils.

Wilmslow Parish Council: budget £244,275, indicative Council Tax of £23.00 per Band D property.

Handforth Parish Council: budget £85,000, indicative Council Tax of £28.00 per Band D property.

Styal Parish Council: budget £8,200, indicative Council Tax of £28.00 per Band D property.
