Robin Hood campaigners take on Wilmslow banks

Wilmslow Group 1

Wilmslow campaigners will be joining Oxfam in a global day of action tomorrow, Wednesday 16th February.

Public sector workers, pensioners, students, mums, and unemployed people affected by the cuts are expected to gather outside the high street banks of HSBC and then Barclays in Bank Square. They intend to hand in a giant 'final demand' notice calling on the banks to pay a £20 billion Robin Hood Tax.

Oxfam is campaigning for a financial transaction tax on banks. They believe The 'Robin Hood Tax' is a tiny tax that would have a massive impact by raising enough money to help poor people, protect public services and tackle climate change at home and abroad.

Robin Hood and his supporters will be outside the banks asking staff at the branches to deliver their message for a 0.05% Robin Hood Tax on speculative trading on financial products such as stocks, bonds, commodities and currency transactions.

Similar stunts will be taking place outside bank branches across the country including Cardiff, Hereford, Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester and London. Throughout the week there will be similar Robin Hood-themed actions in at least 20 countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Norway, the US, Mexico and Senegal.

Campaigners will gather outside the HSBC bank on Bank Square at 12.30 tomorrow, Wednesday 16th February.
