A local digital imaging company has just seen its biggest project to date go live online.

Commissioned by the world class Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, "Virtual Kemet" offers the opportunity to visit the famed Egyptian galleries online, view detailed close up images of ancient artefacts and learn more about their origins.

Conceived originally as an educational resource for use within a prison teaching environment, the scope of the Lottery Funded project is being extended to include schools – and now the online, worldwide community.

The virtual gallery was designed and produced by Weston Digital Imaging. Using similar software to that used for their high definition virtual tours of hotels, wedding venues and leisure facilities, the tour also features hot spots, text, sound and audio files. Richard Weston believes it's the first such project of its kind and he's hoping that many more museums and galleries will be able to take advantage of this type of online presence.

Richard explained: "Keen Egyptologists will be delighted at the range of exhibits that can be explored in great detail. It's also a perfect tool for schools and colleges, to prepare pupils before a visit and help with follow up activities, as well as providing access to exhibits for would–be visitors with mobility problems."
