Local schools outperform nation in Sats

The 2010 primary league tables have been published by the government this week and show that local schools have performed well above the national average.

The tables contain the results of the national curriculum tests, commonly referred to as Sats, which were completed in May this year. The Sats were taken in maths and English by pupils aged 10-11, in their final year of primary school, and they were marked externally.

As the table below illustrates, across the 11 local schools which took part in the Sats 87.8% achieved Level 4 in both maths and English, compared to 73% nationally.

In previous years pupils have also taken Sats in science but these were dropped last year and this year about 25% of schools nationally boycotted the Sats because they object to the test results being used to create league tables, feel they narrow the curriculum and cause too much stress to children.

Two local schools, Dean Oaks Primary School and St Benedict's Catholic Primary School, supported the national action and chose to boycott the exams.

Ashdene Primary School and Gorsey Bank Primary School topped the Wilmslow league table with 95% of pupils at both schools achieving Level 4 in both maths and English - which is the standard that most pupils this age are expected to achieve.

However, it was St Anne's Fulshaw CofE Primary School which achieved the highest average points per pupil score of 29.9 out of a maximum 33.

See the table below for the results of all Wilmslow schools and those in the surrounding area.

The contextual added value is a measure created to show how much progress pupils at a particular school have made compared with others from similar backgrounds. The contextual added value score is calculated for each pupil by comparing their performance at Key Stage 2 with those of other pupils who are from similar backgrounds and achieved similar results at Key Stage 1 nationally.
