Last Wednesday Wilmslow High School's 1st XV Rugby team reached the last 32 of the Daily Mail Cup.

The 5th round of this National Competition saw Wilmslow host unbeaten, local rivals Manchester Grammar School (MGS). This was always going to be a severe test because MGS are an experienced outfit and have scored a magnificent number of tries this season.

Mike Harding said "Manchester might point to an unbalanced penalty count, a disallowed try and a penalty try against them, but the momentum was clearly with Wilmslow for much of the game and the pressure told.

"The MGS pack did reassert themselves briefly in the second half, Nield scoring from a rolling maul. This was however, in response to full back Hudson's fine finish in the corner for a WHS 11-3 lead. The penalty try was given after at least 5 repeated infringements on the visitors line, this score proved decisive.

"We perhaps then saw the best of the MGS high scoring backline, but solid defence from the midfield of Harding and James along with two sparkling breaks to relieve the pressure from half backs Batterbury and McCall showed that Wilmslow too, have players with the ability to make things happen. McCall added a further penalty as a dessert."

The next challenge for Wilmslow High Schools 1st XV Rugby team is Kings School, Macclesfield and then a visit from Ampleforth on 8th December, which will decide who goes through to the last eight of the Daily Mail/RBS Schools' Rugby Cup.
