Vigilant resident leads to police arrest

Police in Wilmslow recovered a stolen vehicle on Saturday night, thanks to the help of a local resident.

At 9.45pm on Saturday, 6th November, a male forced open the front door of a residential address on Buckingham Road in Poynton and stole the car keys to a Black Golf GT TDI. At the time of the incident the occupants were inside having a dinner party with friends and were alerted by the sound of their front door bursting open. The police were immediately called and within 4 minutes a marked police vehicle was behind the stolen car and followed it into Wilmslow, where it was unfortunately lost.

At approximately 9.55pm a male, matching the description of the offender, was detained by Wilmslow Police on Kingsbury Drive, Wilmslow after a local resident reported seeing a male acting suspiciously in the street. At 9.57pm the stolen VW Golf was discovered parked nearby and recovered by the police.

Sergeant Mills, from Wilmslow Neighbourhood Police Area said "This was clearly an excellent result for the police, within 12 minutes of the incident being reported to us the offender had been arrested and the stolen car was recovered - the turn of events that unfolded for us were reminiscent of an episode of The Bill.

"I have to stress that this could not have been achieved without the help of a local resident being vigilant and reporting suspicious activity to us - this led to officers locating the offender nearby and recovering the car.

"This just shows the benefits of residents reporting suspicious incidents to the police, no matter how trivial some things may seem they can often fit into a bigger picture of events and help us detect crime."

The offender, Liam Grehan, was charged with burglary and appeared at Macclesfield Magistrates' Court yesterday.
