Wilmslow's historic buildings identified

A new list featuring 350 of Cheshire East's most distinctive buildings has been published this week.

The Local List of Historic Buildings contains 35 located in Wilmslow, many of which were nominated by residents who feel these buildings enhance both the street scene and sense of distinctiveness in Wilmslow.

The former Rex Cinema buildings, Western Railway Viaduct, Boddington Arch, Barclays Bank, Handforth Library, St Chads Church and Fulshaw C of E Primary School are amongst the historic buildings of Wilmslow - along with a number of residential properties and The Coach & Four, Freemasons Arms and The King William public houses.

Councillor Peter Mason, Cabinet member with responsibility for procurement, assets and shared services, said: "Cheshire East has a rich and varied heritage which is reflected in the buildings and structures which make up its towns and villages. The council is keen to recognise this distinctive heritage.

"The buildings included on the list positively contribute to the quality of the local areas in question. The public role in the preparation of this list has been an important one and I thank all residents across the borough for their contribution."

A Supplementary Planning Document has also been set up alongside the list, which will be used to provide guidance to the likes of developers and planners on planning applications which may affect these heritage assets.

Inclusion in this list ensures that every effort will be made to conserve the buildings and structures, however, it does not afford any additional statutory protection or grant aid.

I don't know what criteria Cheshire East applies, though I see they list churches and chapels in other CE locations. Why then do they not include St Bart's parish church and the former Quaker Meeting House on Altrincham Road, which were in the Pevsner Cheshire volume?
Bizarre!

Why is Pownall Hall, Wilmslow also not included? This is a house of major historical importance, and was filmed by the BBC for its restoration programme, and has been available for public tours in recent years. Also, i wonder if the council website could possibly correct their spelling of Carrwood Road?
