Piping investment into Wilmslow

Engineers from United Utilities have begun essential work to replace old, leak-prone metal water mains with modern new plastic equivalents in Wilmslow.

Corroded pipes, some of which are more than 50 years old, are being replaced on Station Road and Manchester Road, in a seven week project. This work is part of a multi-million pound investment scheme to upgrade water pipes across Cheshire, in order to improve water quality and reduce the risk of bursts and leaks.

Work began this week on Station Road between the junction with Alderly Road and Macclesfield Road. This phase is set to take around four weeks and requires the introduction of a one way system with traffic flowing towards Macclesfield Road. A diversion route is signposted.

Work will then move onto Manchester Road between the junction of Station Road and Mill Street. A one-way system will be installed, with traffic flowing towards Mill Street. Further work is also scheduled to be carried on Church Street in January 2011.

John Nock, United Utilities project manager for the scheme said: "The pipes we are replacing have reached the end of their useful life. Their age makes them more prone to leaks and replacing them is an important way of saving water, and preventing other issues such as water discolouration. We appreciate that roadworks are a nuisance, but we will be going all out to get this work done quickly.

"Ultimately, this scheme will mean a more reliable water supply for customers, and less water wastage, so it's really important for the town."

To complete the work as speedily as possible, engineers will be using a clever technique called 'sliplining', which involves pushing plastic pipes through the existing metal water mains.

"It means fewer holes in the road," confirmed John. "The old metal pipes remain in the ground, but the water travels through the new plastic pipes within. It allows us to get the job done more quickly."

United Utilities representatives will be available at Wilmslow Train Station every Tuesday from 10am-12 noon, to answer questions about the scheme.

Being a local retailer I have to say that I was fairly disgruntled at further roadworks - however, I went to meet with John today to chat with him about my concerns and I have to say that they have got their Public Relations stance just right.

Any annoyance was switfly dealt with by John Mayer (John Nock was not on site), and as promised by a letter delivered to the shop about the works, there was a project manager on site when they said there would be.

The works are regrettable but forgiveable!
