Wilmslow Guild Players' next production is the comedy No Dinner For Sinners by Edward Taylor.

The play is about Jim Watt, who runs the London office of a stock exchange firm, and is hosting dinner for the International Director and his wife, who are members of the anti-permissive society group. They strongly disapprove of unmarried couples living together so Jim asks his girlfriend Helen to pose as his wife.

This suggestion goes down like a lead balloon and Helen walks out on him, leaving Jim with no partner, no cook and only one last option - his eccentric cleaning lady, Edna, who offers to do the job for a fee. A string of miscommunications ensue as Jim trades lies and wives in an attempt to keep his job.

The play is being directed by Moyra Hampson, a long standing member of the Guild Players and experienced director. "I chose this play because I prefer to direct and watch comedies," said Moyra.

"The play was recommended to me by another member of the Players. It has a cast of only six which is important for our small society where large cast plays are usually difficult to stage."

The play is written by Edward Taylor, who has written and produced many things for the BBC such as Just a Minute, Round the Horne, I'm Sorry - I'll Read That Again, Does the Team Think and Dr Finlay's Casebook. He also wrote scripts for Morecambe and Wise, Arthur Askey, Harry Worth and The Two Ronnies.

"One of my favourite characters in the play is the scene-stealer Edna the cleaner," continued Moyra, "she has some of the funniest lines and appears in most of the comic situations."

The Guild Players are lucky to have a cast of gifted comedy actors for this production. Ian Tyler, an experienced actor from other local societies, will be appearing on the Guild stage for the first time as Jim Watt. Bex Stockton, who was so successful in There Goes the Bride, returns to play Terri Pringle. Jess Hale and Michele Eaton play Helen and Edna, and playing the American visitors are Joan Taylor-Jones and Trevor Williams.

"Rehearsals are going well and we are all looking forward to presenting our audiences with an amusing and entertaining production," said Moyra.

The play runs from 27th to 30th October at Wilmslow Guild on Bourne Street. Tickets cost £6 and can be booked by calling 01625 520126 or emailing [email protected]. For further information visit the Wilmslow Guild Players' web site.
