Experts to advise on fitting car seats correctly

Cheshire East Council is backing a nation-wide campaign to boost the safety of children in cars.

The Good Egg Guide initiative is being run by Road Safety GB, the organisation that represents over 200 Local Authorities, and aims to highlight the crucial need to fit child seats correctly and safely. Research shows that more than eight out of ten child safety seats are fitted incorrectly.

Road safety experts from Cheshire East Council and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service will be on hand to talk to people about correctly fitting car seats at Sainsbury's in Wilmslow on Tuesday, September 7th between 1.30pm annd 4pm. Copies of the Good Egg Guide, a handy 'take-home-and-keep' booklet about child car seats for parents and carers, which is funded by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, will also be available.

The Good Egg events will be supported by an advertisement campaign on the back of buses across Cheshire East. The campaign aims to ensure that babies and children are properly restrained while travelling in the vehicles by advising parents and carers how they can make sure that they buy the right seat and fit it correctly.

Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "Fitting a child safety seat is something which many parents may take for granted, however, the consequences of getting it wrong are potentially deadly.

"Hopefully this campaign and the events being run locally will show adults how to fit the seats correctly and result in fewer injured children."

Cllr David Topping, chair of Cheshire Fire Authority, said: "We are fully committed to reducing the numbers of people injured and killed on our roads, we are therefore delighted to be supporting the Good Egg Guide.

"I would encourage all parents to make sure they get a copy – the information inside could really help keep your family safe."

Alan Kennedy, the chair of Road Safety GB said: "We're really excited to be able to announce the launch of Road Safety GB's national campaign in Cheshire East. Children and infants are our most vulnerable road users and an ill-fitted car-seat can mean the difference between life and death.

"The campaign that launched today, will run throughout England this autumn, and over this period we look forward to helping mums, dads and other carers make sure that their children are safe in the car."

It is hoped that the Good Egg Initiative will become an annual campaign and it is initially being run over several months this autumn. For more information on the campaign go to www.protectchildgb.org.uk
