Students at Wilmslow High School have achieved the best GCSE results ever with 82% achieving 5 GCSEs at C or above, which represents an increase of 10% on 2009.

99.7% of students achieved at least one GCSE pass and 73% of students achieved 5 A*-C including English and Mathematics, which is 5% higher than the previous best results. 36 students achieved more than 8 A or A* grades

These outstanding GCSE results cap a winning year for Wilmslow High School students which saw them crowned national champions in rugby, netball, trampolining and the magistrates mock trial.

Mrs Gill Bremner, Headteacher, congratulated students taking GCSEs in 2010 on their achievements, "This year's results are simply outstanding, and even better than we had hoped for. Following the exceptional results students achieved in national competitions this year, these results make us yet more proud of our students' achievements, all that our students contribute to school and the way they approach learning.

"The improvement in results is partly due to the provision of a wider range of qualifications and learning opportunities, although the main credit must go to the students, the school staff who have worked so hard to get the very best from them and their caring families who have nurtured and supported them throughout their education.

"I wish all students collecting their GCSE results today well for their future studies whether it be in our sixth form or elsewhere; I am sure they would want to join me in thanking the teaching staff and their parents for the support they have given in helping them to achieve so well in their examinations."

The following 36 students achieved more than 8 A or A* grades:

Adl Kamran, Anderson Harry, Ashcroft David, Billington Emily, Broome Kelsey, Eggleston James, Gleave Amy, Gosling Andrew, Graham Harriet, Griffiths-Jackson Jack, Harding Ethan, Howells Ella, Hsieh Bryan, Hulme Jake, Hyde Joanna, Jarvis Megan, Jones Larissa, Kennedy Rory, Lee Oliver, Martin Laura, Mayers Amy, McIntosh Andrew, Mecrow Ellie, Morton-Smith Harry, Nuttall Lauren, Pettitt James, Robinson Charlie, Sainthouse Peter, Smirnova Katya, Smith Maria, Steele Jack, Taylor Imogen, Taylor Lucas, Thomas Catherine, Waugh Thomas and Weinberg Lottie.

The council have just announced that it has been another record-breaking year for GCSE students in Cheshire East.

Provisional figures show that a record 63% of students achieved five or more A*- C grades, including English and maths, compared to 57% last year. Students gaining five A*- C grades in any subject is also up, from 72% last year, to 80% this year.

Councillor Hilda Gaddum, Cabinet member with responsibility for children and family services said: “This is a tremendous achievement for all the pupils involved and my congratulations go to them all.

"The figure that is most important is the five A*- C grades including English and maths and to achieve a six per cent increase in this category and comfortably get over the 60% barrier is excellent news."
