The review of Community Governance arrangements in Wilmslow, Handforth and Styal is now entering the second stage of consultation. This review was commenced following the receipt of three separate petitions from electors in the area calling for parish councils to be created.
The first stage of public consultation took place between 10th May 2010 and 4th June 2010, when views were sought on future community governance arrangements, including whether a single parish council should be created for Wilmslow, Handforth and Styal, whether separate parish councils should be created for these three areas, or whether no parish councils should be created.
The draft recommendation is for the formation of three parish councils: Handforth with seven Councillors, Styal with five Councillors and Wilmslow with 15 Councillors. The Council has also made proposals for the way in which Wilmslow parish should be warded, dependant upon the outcome of the current boundary review of Cheshire East Council wards by the Boundary Commission. Sub dividing the area into parish wards allows for elected Councillors to represent a smaller geographic area, rather than the parish area as a whole.

The Council is now consulting electors, stakeholders, local organisations, and anyone with an interest in the review throughout August and early September. The closing date for representations to be made is Wednesday 15th September. These views will then be taken into consideration in reaching the final decision, which is anticipated to be made at a meeting of the full Council on 14th October 2010.
Any changes which may result from this review will be implemented in time for the next local elections in May 2011.
