Scarecrow Festival winners announced

The Scarecrow Festival, which saw a colourful crop of over 90 scarecrows take over the streets of Wilmslow last week, ended with the 'Best Scarecrow in Town' being crowned at yesterday's Wilmslow Show.

Wilmslow's first Scarecrow Festival, organised by the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean and the members of the Wilmslow Business Group, has proved an overwhelming success with 85 local businesses taking part and 93 different scarecrows creating quite a buzz around town.

Sixteen scarecrows were on display at the Rotary stand at yesterday's show, where Roger West, the Deputy Mayor of Cheshire East, applauded the Rotary Club and Wilmslow Business Group for pulling this festival together. He said "They are to be commended for the tremendous amount of effort needed, they have done a marvellous job."

First prize went to the Horse and Jockey pub on Gravel Lane, Harrington & Hallworth jewellers on Grove Street were second and third place went to the King William on Manchester Road. In addition, the scarecrows created by Flourish flower stall on Grove Street, Shenton's farm shop in Handforth and Multi York were all highly commended.

Emma from the Horse and Jockey said "We're very happy but surprised to win. Angie and I made the scarecrow on the spur of the moment, it was all very last minute and we never thought we'd win."

Peter Friend from the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean said " We are delighted by all the support we have received and we are delighted that a lot of people are already talking about next year and how we can develop on the success of this year's Scarecrow Festival.

"We'd like to thank all the businesses that took part for all their support and effort. I am sure that a lot of businesses that didn't take part are now regretting their decision and I look forward to a bigger and better Wilmslow Scarecrow Festival next year."
