A project aimed at raising the profile of the 2012 Olympic Games and inspiring all people, young and old, to become more active was launched at Wilmslow High School on Friday morning.
The Macclesfield School Sport Partnership Young Ambassador Project 'On yoUR Marks, Get Set, Go' also aims to get people engaged with the 2012 Olympics and aware of the Olympic and Paralympic values of; excellence, friendship, respect, equality, courage, determination and inspiration.
For the launch a fun packed day was organised which encouraged local schools and the public to participate in the 20past12 dance, which was developed by Cheshire Dance. Eight Olympic and Paralympic Champions; Adam Whitehead (swimming), Chris Cook (swimming), Craig Heap (gymnastics), Alex Danson (hockey), Kerry Jane Williams (hockey), Jenna Downing (inline skating) and Donna Hartley MBE (athletics)) took part in the launch, along with the Mayor and Mayoress.
Following a welcome from Gill Bremner, Head Teacher at Wilmslow High School, the Young Ambassadors gave a short presentation on how they will inspire young people to participate in physical activity before they departed to take their 'own champion' to a local school.
Each school had been challenged during National School Sports Week to get as many young people doing three hours or more of physical activity during that week. At each school three children, who had demonstrated all the Olympic and Paralympic values that week, received a Values Medal and the champion talked to the children about how important it is to be physically active and always do their best in everything they do.The sporting heroes participated in the 20past12 dance whilst at the school, helping to engage all the young people, staff and parents.
Tens of thousands of people across Cheshire East took part in the mass dance extravaganza, each of them performing a specially designed, easy-to-learn routine which they performed at exactly 20 minutes past 12.
