King's School geographers are on top of the world after qualifying for the Geographical Association's Worldwise Olympiad.
A trio of talented Macclesfield eco-warriors won the North West Worldwise Quiz, beating teams from 13 other top schools from across the region to bring home the trophy.
Challenged across human, physical and environmental geography, the team of Abdullah Atif, Robb Thomas and Jobin Joseph, showed themselves to have, as their teacher Jonathan Wales, said, "great understanding and empathy for the world."
Jobin said: "Geography gives you a much deeper and sensitive appreciation of how other people live and makes you a more rounded individual."
Robb added: "I love physical geography because it explains how natural events occur, many of which might have baffled previous generations."
While Abdullah concluded: "The world around us is constantly changing and geography allows you to track how different countries rise and fall across so many different categories."
The team faced a number of different rounds, including a directional challenge, such as if you went east, south-west and then north from this spot where would you be. There was a map reading challenge to determine physical features plus a picture round showing a recent global event that they had to identify, such as the Libyan dam collapse. For the more simple tasks there was also a basic challenge naming capital cities, major rivers and landmarks.
Jonathan Wales said: "We are very proud of these top class students who are extremely well read, very hard working and, most importantly, very concerned about their environment and our impact on the planet."
