HSBC announces closure of Wilmslow branch

HSBC has announced the closure of a further 114 branches next year as more customers move to banking online.

Amongst those set to shut is the Wilmslow branch on Bank Square, which will close on May 2nd 2023.

The bank says use of their branch network has fallen by 65% over the past five years and the decline in branch use has accelerated so much since the Covid-19 pandemic that some of the branches closing are now serving fewer than 250 customers a week.

Jackie Uhi, HSBC UK's Managing Director of UK Distribution, said: "People are changing the way they bank and footfall in many branches is at an all-time low, with no signs of it returning. Banking remotely is becoming the norm for the vast majority of us. Not only can we do it anywhere at any time of day or night, many more things can be done at the customers' convenience and don't rely on a branch visit.

"Branches will continue to play an important role in day-to-day banking, while providing specialist face-to-face support in moments that matter. In addition to our branch network, customers can access services through the Post Office network, our Community Pop-ups and soon-to-come Banking Hubs, alongside Live Chat, social media and through telephone banking.

"The decision to close a branch is never easy or taken lightly, especially if we are the last branch in an area, so we've invested heavily in our 'post closure' strategy, including providing free tablet devices to selected branch customers who do not already have a device to bank digitally, alongside one-to-one coaching to help them migrate to digital banking.

"Our commitment to supporting the UK's new banking hubs and other community access to cash initiatives under development remains steadfast and we look forward to significant and quicker progress being made in 2023, now much of the groundwork for setting up Cash Access UK Ltd, has been done."

Closure of Knutsford branch also announced. Makes it difficult for HSBC customers who appreciate talking to real staff.

One has always had to queue in there even when one is the only customer.
All as bad and obviously don’t want the hassle of customers.
CASH - use it or lose it then welcome central bank digital currency over which one will have no control. Hair cut sir ( for your savings of course).

Frustrating. Nearest one will be Stockport. I work 5 days a week, how am I supposed to get there if necessary, means taking a day off, ridiculous.

Extremely disappointed in HSBC. I have banked at Wilmslow branch for last 46 years, first when it was Midland Bank then HSBC…

I remained a good customer, and now they walk away , ensuring we are pushed on-line with all the security hazards involved without a care in the world.

Shame on you HSBC !

Not Happy?

Change your bank and get some £££'s for so doing!

Other 'traditional' banks in town: Santander, Halifax, NatWest & Barclays - & Handelsbank if you have a few £million you aren't using very much! Are there any more?

To cut a long story short I have decided to switch my HSBC account, to one of their competitors.

I've also found out that at least one of their competitors who have a branch on Grove Street will give me £175 for doing so.

After 37 years with the same account, the closure of my fourth local branch is the "straw" that broke this camel's back.
