Cinema fans get an early Christmas present as festive season kicks off in Wilmslow

To celebrate the return of cinema to the town centre, the switching on of Wilmslow's Christmas lights was undertaken by Louis and Sophie Mundin of the Rex Cinema, on Saturday, 17th November.

As well as enjoying the start off the festive season, the crowd were delighted to hear the exciting news that the Rex Cinema will officially open on Friday, 21st December.

However, on Wednesday 19th December they be hosting a preview event which will be a charity showing of The Greatest Showman with all the funds going to the Wilmslow Aid Trust. Allocations of tickets will be via a draw so ensure everyone has an equal chance of being at the first showing with details of how to how to enter the draw being made available nearer the time.

This year's Wilmslow Christmas lights switch-on was been brought forward by one week from previous years in order to coincide with the Artisan Market which had a special Christmas theme and was open from 10am to 6pm.

Once again the Reindeer Parade proved popular as they paraded from Bank Square to the Library Garden, via the market, where the stage hosted performances from local choirs.

Angela McPake, Chair of Wilmslow Town Council's events group, said "We were really pleased to see our busiest switch on event this year and running it alongside the market helped give an additional reason to bring people in and saw the traders have their most successful day. The reindeers continue to be a huge draw and they, and Father Christmas led the parade in style. The new location also worked well although we already have some ideas of how to make things even better next year!"

She added "The various choirs on stage- whether from local schools or adult choirs added a suitably festive note and the Mundin's announcing their plans for the opening of the Rex truly was star on the top of the Wilmslow Christmas Tree!"

Denise Valente of Wilmslow Artisan Market said "The bringing together of the Wilmslow Artisan Market and the lights switch on worked exceptionally well.

"The decision to do this was taken based on numerous requests from the public over previous years."

She added "Combining the two events brought the entire Wilmslow community together and this was further consolidated by the announcement of the Rex Cinema opening dates on Friday 21st December. A fabulous festive start to the Christmas season."
