World War 1 memorial plaque unveiled

To commemorate the end of World War 1, a large replica of the bronze plaque given to the family of every person who was killed fighting has been installed in Handforth.

Rev Steve Burmester, of St Chads, led a service of dedication on Friday, 9th November, where the Dead Man's Coin was unveiled by Rt Hon MP Esther McVey and the Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire David Briggs

Children from Wilmslow Grange School also attended the unveiling to read a poem and read out the names of the fallen from WW1 who came from Handforth.

Anthony Harrison started the project over a year ago and had a direct replica of a 1918 WW1 Dead Man's Penny commissioned with "Handforth Village 1918-2018" moulded onto it.

Anthony explained "The penny itself is 500mm instead of the 4" which the original was. It's made of solid bronze and had been an idea of mine right from the offset of building the memorial.

"I hope to do another custom one which will be my own design in 2045 for the centenary of WW2 also, with a few other projects in between."

All the money to fund the project was raised in the local community and Anthony Harrison also ran the Royal Marine Commando run which helped towards the funding.

Anthony added "In the build up to Remembrance Sunday I also delivered educational assemblies to the local primary schools of Handforth about the reasons and causes which led to WW1 and the role Handforth played during the war."

This is an excellent addition to the war memorial and the service was perfect, compliments to the Wilmslow Grange pupils, a credit to both the school and their parents. Anthony's dedication to the memorial and the village is also to be commended.
