Reader's Letter: Storm hits Wilmslow

The season of 'the Fall' took on a new meaning for residents of Wilmslow Park on Saturday night. A large sycamore fell across the road half way up the hill that is part of the north bank of the River Bollin. The tree was in the land adjoining Garth Heights and its crown reached to the other side of the road bringing down branches of neighbouring trees with it.

Nick Horrocks, a resident of Bollinwood Chase, was undoubtedly the first to see the obstruction. Nick says 'I drove down to Wilmslow town at just before eight in the evening to collect a take away. I came back less than ten minutes later, to find the road completely blocked. I had to back down to Cow Lane and then use Macclesfield Road and Adlington Road to get round to my house. I consider I was lucky not to get crushed."

Barriers were put across, closing a section of the road and contractors arrived on Sunday afternoon to start clearing the large fallen tree trunk. This accident was probably a result of Storm Callum and may furthermore be a consequence of the dry summer affecting the anchorage of tree roots on a bank.
