Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra (WSO) were amongst the successful voluntary and community organisations to be awarded a community grant when the cabinet for performance and capacity met this week. As part of the final round of grants for 2009/10 the large amateur orchestra, founded in 1947, was awarded £250.

The WSO are pleased to hear that they will receive a grant from the new Cheshire East Council. A spokesman for WSO said "For many years we have received support from Macclesfield Council and it is good to have this continuing with the new body. We also have received generous support from the Evans Trust, over many years, which has greatly contributed to our continuing success."

He added "Other than these grants we get our main income from membership subscriptions, ticket sales and playing for local choirs. Without these additional moneys we would be unable to bring classical music to Wilmslow and hope that we will gain more audience support to ensure our continuing existence."

Wilmslow Guild Friday Art Group were also successful in being awarded the £65 they requested. The grant will be used to purchase exhibition boards to enable them to exhibit their artwork at various venues.

A spokesman from Cheshire East said "The Council recognises the valuable input that the voluntary and community sector brings to the quality of life in the community. Funding is focused on those organisations that complement the aims and objectives of the Corporate Plan."

This was an excellent concert and Wilmslow is very fortunate to have an orchestra of this standard.

People should support them as we do not have a lot of music groups here and you would not know they were amateur players.
