Hundreds join the Scarecrow Parade

Around 500 children and adults joined the noisy and colourful Scarecrow Parade as it made its way through the town centre on Saturday, June 30th.

Led by the Fianna Phadraig pipe band, the parade stretched almost two thirds of the way down Grove Street as it headed to Bank Square.

Prior to setting off Tatton MP Esther Mcvey joined rotary members to hand out small, sponsored by local businesses, to the children.

Ian Ferguson of Wilmslow Dean Rotary Club - who have organised the Wilmslow Scarecrow Festival for the past nine years, said "I cannot thank the Wilmslow police enough for their assistance in helping our Rotary members keeping safe those attending the parade."

To coincide with the Scarecrow Parade, Wilmslow Library launchED the annual Summer Reading Challenge a week early this year and had a record number of children sign up for the national challenge - the theme of which is 'Mischief Makers' to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Beano.

Wilmslow Library also held a badge making competition prior to the parade and the children lined up wearing their badges for MP Esther McVey to judge the winner who was given the library's scarecrow to hold during the parade.

There is still plenty of time sign up for the Reading Challenge which runs during the long summer holidays, encouraging children to read any six library books of their choice and collect stickers and incentives along the way to encourage them to keep going. This year the stickers contain clues to help the children to find the hidden treasure on their special Beanotown map!

Children with the small scarecrows can get free access to the Wilmslow Show on Sunday, 8th July, and, if they go to the Rotary stand, will be given a free Lego kit.

Lovely family event. Shame it clashed with the Gardens open day, which was also a lovely event.
