Following a number of fires in recent weeks which have started deliberately some of those have been spoken to by the Fire Authority and warned about the dangers.

Three fires have been lit in Meriton Park whilst there have also been incidents in Handforth Dean, Lindow Common and Stanley Hall Park which are believed to have been started by teenagers.

Sgt John O'Driscoll said "It strikes of kids experimenting but obviously there is a risk of things escalating and we wanted to try an nip things in the bud.

He added "In total five young teenagers have been identified and spoken to. This was through names given by the Fire Service from youths on the scene when they attended and names passed by others directly spoken to. No formal action has been taken but they have been strongly advised about the consequences of playing with fire."

He continued "We have had nothing reported in the last few days which I hope is a sign that the warning has filtered through to those concerned."

Why has no formal action been taken aganst the culprits? Slap on the wrist approach seems so common these days. I do hope they’ll treat the people that started the fires on the moors more seriously?
