An Alderley Edge property entrepreneur is leading a 'revolution' in retirement living with Arbor Living's latest development in Lymm.

Graham Richardson is chief executive of the Arbor Living Group, which builds luxury homes exclusively for the over-55s.

The aim is to address the national shortage of single-storey living, which is leaving couples and individuals who wish to downsize struggling to find a suitable property.

The Lymm development, which is on the site of the former Willowpool Garden Centre, is made up of 13 two-bedroom park homes spread over four acres – with prices starting at £405,000.

With high vaulted ceilings, large fully fitted kitchens and spacious open plan living areas, they are designed specifically to allow people to downsize without compromising on their lifestyle.

They are also accessible and easy to maintain with low running costs, to allow people to live independently for as long as possible.

Graham said: "Once children have flown the nest, many people find themselves living in family homes that are too big for them, difficult to maintain and expensive to run.

"But there are hardly any bungalows being built, and for a lot of people flats are just not practical, so we decided to come up with a solution that is unlike anything else on the market."

Arbor Living is based in Alderley Edge and is a family business; Graham's son George runs the marketing team, his wife Gill does the interior design for the homes, and his younger son Jack plans to join once he has finished his business degree.

In addition to Willowpool they have another development on the market in Lincoln, and four more in the pipeline.

The properties are freehold with have private gardens, and the site comes with 24-hour security.

"It's been great getting the site in Lymm as it's just down the road," Graham said. "To be able to bring these innovative homes to our local community is really special, and it's a beautiful site.

"These properties provide a whole new way of looking at downsizing, and one which we believe represents the future of retirement living."
