Chapelwood: A new approach to retirement living

Wilmslow is at the centre of a retirement living revolution thanks to the arrival of Chapelwood on Chapel Lane. With its own deli, spa, workout studio, treatment room and lounge - complete with an honesty bar - Chapelwood brings something entirely different for downsizers and retirees alike.

The new build four-storey red brick property mirrors the local Victorian architecture and is surrounded by generous lush, green landscaping and spacious peaceful gardens. Indoors, you are welcomed into a large lobby that sits at the centre of the shared social spaces, which includes a wonderful deli serving fresh seasonal meals and the best in coffee, tea and cakes.

Clare Hambleton, general manager at Chapelwood, has seen first-hand how easily a supportive, friendly community begins. "The people who have moved in here have quickly formed great friendships. They meet each other at our regular events – which include cookery classes, quizzes and a lunch club. Sometimes, simply spending time together on a more casual basis in our lovely lounge can be great fun, with the honesty bar bringing a unique little twist." Owners are free to use the lounge for an evening drink or make use of it for larger gatherings - it's a versatile space that has also recently been used for the inaugural Chapelwood cinema night.

"Perhaps half of those who live at Chapelwood have some connection to the area, several have family nearby and so can keep existing relationships going. But just as many have come to us from different parts of the country or even overseas, and I often hear how important our sense of community is to them. Many have bought here so that they have their own private bolthole when they are visiting their children or grandchildren nearby."

There are certain things that people really miss when they downsize, such as gardens and space to entertain. At Chapelwood, PegasusLife has prioritised beautiful grounds for people to enjoy - either looking out from the lounge or relaxing outdoors - and social spaces including an attractive lounge that makes it easy for the owners to get together.

"We've made sure there is a nice large table for people to sit together in the deli - and you can always book it for Sunday Lunch with your family, too" says Clare. The deli serves the very best in light, nourishing meals, as well as great coffee, tea and delicious sweet treats.

The wellness suite has a gym that is equipped with Keiser machinery, which is specifically designed to be gentler on the body so even if you're new to using the gym, it is easy to devise a routine suited to any individual's needs. The hydrotherapy pool, sauna and treatment room complete the wellness suite, whilst therapist Hollie can also be found running Tai Chi classes, which has done wonders for many residents' fitness and flexibility.

What's clear is that thoughtful, intelligent housing design improves wellbeing and supports people in living healthy lives. PegasusLife has embraced this philosophy and set out to bring a new aspirational approach to the retirement living sector, moving away from functional design and self-contained spaces to create schemes where communal facilities encourage social interaction, and open plan homes are full of natural light.

PegasusLife is pioneering change in the retirement community, ensuring that the transition into retirement becomes more transparent by offering its homes on 999-year leases, no exit fees and operating property management on a not-for-profit basis.
