The installation of new traffic signals at a busy junction Handforth, which has caused considerable delays, is now complete.

The work to deliver improvements at the junction of Wilmslow Road and Station Road is part of a package of works linked to the A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road.

The following activities have been completed:

• new kerbs for new widened footway on Wilmslow Road
• installation of kerbs for new pedestrian refuge island on Station Road
• installation of new drainage
• installation of traffic signal ducting and loop boxes
• new pavement flags on the footway outside of the medical centre on Wilmslow Road

Next week work on the pavements will continue.

The works began on 29th January at the Wilmslow Road and Station Road junction, but due to adverse weather conditions causing a delay the temporary lights remained until Thursday, 22nd March.

Two Sunday road closures will be required on 8th and 15th April on Station Road - Dean Road - Handforth Road, to carry out patching work.

The closures will be in operation between 7am and midnight during which time access to properties for residents will be maintained.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said "We understand that there is no right time to undertake works on such busy junctions, and this has been planned to try to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and members of the travelling public."

The installation of the new roundabout facility at the Dean Road and Welland Road junction has been re-scheduled until summer 2018.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said "This should enable Stockport Council's drainage repair works on the A555 to be completed and traffic levels are likely to be lower during the summer period, minimising the associated disruption to residents and road users."

Is that just one lane heading South?

Interested to know who requested the “improvements”. Have personally never had an issue with crossing the road with a buggy and 2 dogs.

Yes indeed only one lane heading south instead of 2 so should mean more queuing traffic
Makes absolutely no sense to me and have you seen the size of the cycle crossing !
The designer of this must have been from Amsterdam.

It's not a cycle crossing Marc, it a car free safety box for cyclist

There was only ever one marked lane in each direction. Some tried to create a right lane heading south, but there wasn't enough room. Biggest problem so far is that there is no repeater traffic light when turning into Bulkeley road. Once you've gone through the lights you don't know if they've changed. Welcome news on the pedestrian crossing though. No more death-defying sprints in front of the traffic.

Fantastic improvements and well worth the time spent waiting in queues, caused by the temporary lights and I can certainly understand why the work had to be completed and couldn’t be delayed. What an absolute joke this council is, how much has been spent on this? Certainly it will be multiple x £100k What other grand schemes have they got in mind to further our travel misery?

Hmm, new traffic lights however, when wanting to manoeuvre across the junction say from Wilmslow Road onto Station Road you no longer know what is happening with the lights for the oncoming traffic if they are changing or on red!! And vice versa! I dont personally see the need to have gone to the expense and trouble to put pedestrian crossing stops on Station Road as the island was always there or on the other little road opposite next to the Kitchen Showroom, i forget whats its called! The pedestrian crossing across the main road is a good idea though for people to cross safely .

And the cycle area looks bigger because of the wide angle lens

Gordon Hyslop I don't really understand your comment but just to clear up your comment about this council being a joke, I believe the crossing was paid for by Stockport MBC to mitigate the effects of the airport relief road.
