Ashdene Primary continues to be 'good'

As the result of an Ofsted inspection carried out on 30th January 2018, Ashdene Primary School has been rated good and made some notable improvements.

This was the first short inspection since the school was judged to be good in January 2014 and Ofsted inspectors concluded that the leadership team had maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection.

The inspector stated "Based on the evidence gathered during this short inspection, I am of the opinion that the school has demonstrated strong practice and marked improvement in certain areas. This may indicate that the school is improving towards being outstanding. Therefore, I am recommending that the school's next inspection be a section 5 inspection."

"There have been some notable improvements since the school's last inspection. Pupils' progress in reading, mathematics and, in particular, writing has been very strong. In 2017, progress and attainment for Year 6 pupils in these key subjects were significantly above the national average. Pupils' achievement in Year 2 was similarly impressive."

He continued "You have successfully addressed the areas for improvement identified in the previous inspection report. The quality of teaching, learning and assessment has improved substantially. A rigorous new approach to planning and assessment ensures that teachers closely match work to pupils' needs to ensure that they develop the appropriate skills in each subject effectively. You have also enhanced teachers' development of their skills by establishing a new programme of training. Staff observe and learn from each other's work. They then apply the most effective strategies to their own teaching, which improves their confidence."

The inspector also found that all groups of pupils are making strong progress in English and Maths, subject leaders have improved their checks on the quality of teaching and learning and have a clear view of pupils' achievement. Additionally there have been substantial improvements in reducing absence among pupils who are disadvantaged and those who have special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Collette Mather, Headteacher said "We are thrilled with our most recent Ofsted report and the recognition from the inspector that Ashdene has made some notable improvements since our last inspection. I was pleased that the inspector noted that pupils' progress in reading, writing and maths is very strong and significantly above average The children of Ashdene are an absolute credit to the school and the inspector was able to see that children develop excellent attitudes to learning resulting in strong outcomes across the whole curriculum, the children are rightly very proud of their achievements. This would not be possible without the most incredible team of staff, governors and parents who passionately believe in improving outcomes for each and every child. I am extremely proud to be the headteacher at Ashdene and I am looking forward to many more successes to ensure that our children have the very best experiences."

Anne Gadsden, Chair of Governors at the school said that she was absolutely delighted with the comments made by the HMI who had captured Ashdene's drive for all to be 'passionate about learning' in his letter. He recognised the unending commitment and dedication of all the staff at the school recognising that at the school's next inspection it may well be judged as outstanding. During his feedback he reported that the children said that they felt very proud to be a pupil at Ashdene and we, as governors, are very proud of them. Finally I would just to like to say a huge thank you, on behalf of the Governing Board, to all those who play any part in making Ashdene such a great place to learn, however big or small that part may be. - Thank you."
