Police sergeant denies murdering his detective wife

A police sergeant from Wilmslow who has been accused of murdering his detective wife Leanne McKie has pleaded not guilty to both murder and manslaughter.

Darren McKie, 43, from Burford Close appeared at Chester Crown Court this morning, Friday, 5th January, via video link from prison.

The father of three was arrested in the early hours of Friday 29th September after the body of Leanne McKie was found in a lake at Poynton Park. He was subsequently charged with murder on Monday, 2nd October.

Leanne McKie, 39, served with Greater Manchester Police since 2001, working in the Serious Sexual Offences Unit.

Leanne's parents, Raymond and Ellen, said: "Leanne was a beautiful and loving daughter and a wonderful mother to our three special grandchildren. She was the light of our lives and will be so sadly missed every day. Love Mum, Dad and close family."

The trial is set for to commence on Monday 5th March at Chester Crown Court and is estimated to last three weeks.

Mr McKie remains in police custody.
