Parents, teachers and children protest over school cuts

Parents, grandparents, pupils, governors and staff from schools across the town and beyond gathered on The Carrs on Friday afternoon to protest against school funding cuts.

The weather was glorious and many enjoyed a paddle in the Bollin as well as an ice cream while they listened to speakers talking about the background to the current funding issues, and the potential impact of the proposed national funding formula, should it be implemented in this format.

The protest was part of a day of action organised by the national fair funding campaign during which thousands of people across the country attended marches, protests, picnics and assemblies to make their concerns were heard.

Over sixty supporters attended the protest and took part in a minute's silence to remember those affected by the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena before enjoying their picnics while they listened to school staff, governors, parents and pupils talking about the value of investing in education and the need to ensure that all schools are funded sufficiently.

Everyone then gathered their placards and posters, and marched from the Bollin into the centre of Wilmslow.

Headteacher, Clare Daniel said "It was very heartening to see so many people gathered together, determined that school funding should remain high on the agenda for the sake of all our children. We would like to thank everyone who joined us for the picnic and march. All major parties have acknowledged that school funding will be addressed in their manifestos, so we will wait to see how this translates into practical solutions after the election."
