Orchestra's spring concert has 'brooding north' theme

Bob Chasey

The brooding north gives the theme for Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra's Spring Concert. The main composer is Sibelius. His rich and passionate First Symphony from 1899 is the main work, but we open with his attractive Karelia Suite, written for a national pageant in 1893.

Just a few years previously, and a nearly two hundred miles to the east, in St Petersburg, Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet received its first performance. The Suite, which features the famous Waltz, sums up the drama and romance of the story. Sibelius' stirring Finlandia brings the evening to a rousing conclusion.

The conductor is Bob Chasey, who we are delighted to welcome back to Wilmslow.

As always, the venue is the Evans Theatre in Wilmslow Leisure Centre. There is plenty of convenient free parking, and the theatre itself has comfortable seating and good disabled and restricted mobility access. The tiered auditorium ensures that everyone can see as well as hear clearly.

The concert takes place on Saturday 22nd April at 7.45 in Wilmslow Leisure Centre. Tickets cost £12 (Concession £10, Under 18s £2) and may be obtained from the Ticket Secretary (01925 756 144), at Bang & Olufsen, Alderley Rd, Wilmslow (01625 527666), at Therapy, Bank Sq (01625 400113), or at the door.
