Youngsters inspired to grow their own veg

Raised Beds 06

A local group is hoping to encourage more people, especially youngsters, to grow their own vegetables.

Transition Wilmslow are asking local vegetable growers to nurture their surplus vegetable seedlings and consider donating them for local Scout and Guide groups to plant in Transition Wilmslow's newly extended raised beds. The planting will take place in early May as a way of encouraging young people to see how good it is to 'grow your own'.

Garry Olson said "In January a small group of volunteers from Transition Wilmslow worked hard to build six more raised beds in the Community Garden at The Temp, Gravel Lane. The new beds triple the available growing area and this summer should see a significant crop of vegetables. The aims include showing people what can be achieved, inspiring them to grow some of their own food at home, encouraging healthy outdoor activity and fostering community spirit. In the spring it is planned to involve scouts and guides in planting and caring for the vegetables but anyone is welcome.

"We are always looking to widen the range of helpers so if you would like to be involved contact us at [email protected]."
