Cheshire Constabulary is targeting those who put their own and others' lives at risk by failing to wear seatbelts while driving as part of a week-long European-wide campaign.
Officers will be out in force across the county this week stopping drivers and passengers found not to be wearing seatbelts and ensuring people are aware of how critical they are in keeping you safe.
Officers regularly keep an eye out for anyone committing any of the fatal four – speeding, using a mobile phone illegally, drink/drug driving and not wearing a seatbelt – but this week they will be paying special focus on educating the importance of wearing a seatbelt.
On Monday, 13th March, the first day of the week long campaign, 23 drivers were issued with £100 fines for not wearing seatbelts.
Inspector Steve Griffiths, of the Constabulary's Road Policing Unit, said: "Wearing a seatbelt while driving should be common sense but there are still many drivers and passengers who fail to do so.
"Not wearing a seatbelt is one of the biggest killers on our roads. By not wearing one people are increasing their risk of death in a collision, therefore why wouldn't you spend a few seconds putting one on?
"It is important everyone is aware of the huge risks and dangers that come from not wearing a seatbelt and this week officers will highlight the consequences involved."
The campaign by TISPOL – The European traffic police network – will run until Sunday, 19th March. Anyone found not wearing a seatbelt will receive a non-endorsable £100 fixed penalty notice.
