Big plans for orchestra's 70th anniversary concert

Edward Gregson

Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra's first concert of 2017 is a very special one, as it marks our 70th anniversary.

Our president, Edward Gregson, will conduct and also preside over a special cake-cutting ceremony! But before that, we will be tackling an all-Russian programme. Christmas frivolities are behind us, and it's time to take on a 'big' piece – and this time it's Shostakovich's epic Tenth Symphony, stark and brooding at the opening, but winning through to an energetic finale.

Romantic warmth is supplied by Tchaikovsky's ever-popular Romeo and Juliet overture, and in between we have a more unusual item, the Saxophone Concerto by Alexander Glazunov. Once hailed as the great hope of Russian music, by the 1930s, when this was written, he was in exile in France, and it's a mellow, reflective work. The soloist tonight is Rob Buckland, head of Saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music.

The concert takes place on Saturday 18th February at 7.45pm in Wilmslow Leisure Centre. Tickets cost £12 (Concession £10, Under 18s £2). Tickets may be obtained from the Ticket Secretary (01925 756 144), at Bang & Olufsen, Alderley Road (01625 527666), at Therapy, Bank Square (01625 400113), or at the door.
