Two Wilmslow doctors have raised £50,000 to purchase a new state of the art diagnostic ultrasound scanner, which will be located at Wilmslow Health Centre.

Practice partners Dr Amar Ahmed and Dr Mark Brennan have been working to raise the funds over the past couple of years and through a mixture of charitable donations and investment by them, the final sum was recently achieved.

The scanner employs the latest technology and will benefit local NHS patients who can access a range of routine and specialised scans without having to travel further afield to hospital.

The community scan service launches this week and will operate six days per week, including Saturday mornings. It will be managed by Wilmslow Health Centre with scans performed by a specialist team of consultant radiologists and sonographers from Manchester Royal Infirmary. The service is expected to minimise waiting times for patients requiring a range of diagnostic investigations.

GP and Wilmslow Health Centre Partner Dr Amar Ahmed said: "Faster diagnosis leads to better health outcomes for patients. We are thrilled to have been able to invest in the purchase of this machine and to offer an enhanced community scan service to our patients, and the wider Cheshire community.

"Patients don't have to be registered at Wilmslow Health Centre GP practice to access the new scanner, they can be referred to the service by their own GP. We will be pleased to offer an efficient service to all patients; a prompt appointment with rapid turnaround of scan results."

Lead Consultant Radiologist Dr Bala Rajshankar commented. "The scanner allows us to obtain high resolution and Doppler images for musculoskeletal, abdominal, pelvic and vascular imaging. Additionally, we can offer some specialist areas such as Fibroscan and elastography which isn't even available at some hospitals. Our team is looking forward to working with the new scanner at Wilmslow Health Centre and welcoming even more patients to the service."
