Two Wilmslow residents have been recognised in the Queen's New Years Honours List.

Jonathan Norfolk, Head Coach for the Great Britain Para-Cycling team has been awarded an MBE for services to cycling.

Formally Assistant National Sprint Coach to the Great Britain Cycling Team, 41-year-old Jon was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire and now lives in Wilmslow.

He gained selection onto the Great Britain Cycling Team himself in November 2003 following a number of successful years of track sprint competition and many national titles. He went on to represent Great Britain in numerous international competitions including World Cup events in Sydney and Mexico.

Following this, he began working as a tandem pilot with the paralympic athlete Anthony Kappes. After two years of training, Norfolk and Kappes broke the world record in the kilo (B/VI class) and won the sprint event at the 2008 Paralympic World Cup.

Since switching to a coaching role, Jon has coached sprint athletes through the Great Britain Olympic Development and Academy Programmes and worked with GB athletes who have competed in worlds cups, the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Speaking about his MBE on Twitter, Jon said "Honoured to have receive an MBE today. So proud to work in such a forward thinking & exciting place as @BritishCycling."

Wilmslow resident Fiona Gilkinson, Accelerated Payment Team Lead at HM Revenue and Customs, was awarded an OBE for services to tackling tax non-compliance and tax avoidance.

Olympic's golden couple Jason and Laura Kenny from Chelford are also among the local heroes to be recognised in the New Year's Honours list. The newleyweds both received a CBE for their services to cycling, upgrading the OBEs they received in 2013, having brought home five gold medals between them from the Rio Olympics. Jason is now joint holder of the highest number of Olympic gold medals for a British athlete alongside fellow track cyclist Chris Hoy.

"Wilmslow resident Fiona Gilkinson, Accelerated Payment Team Lead at HM Revenue and Customs, was awarded an OBE for services to tackling tax non-compliance and tax avoidance."

Presumably George Osborne was not involved in this nomination?
