Season kicks off with programme of Russian favourites

Tom Newall

Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra kicks off its concert season on Saturday, 15th October, with a programme of Russian favourites.

Mussorgsky's Night on the Bare Mountain brings a halloweeny flavour to the opening. The next item is the second Suite Khachaturian's Spartacus, which begins with the famous Adagio. It has featured in various films, including Caligula, The Hudsucker Proxy and Ice Age – Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and has been used as the background music for gymnastics and figure skating – but none of this, probably, would have happened if it hadn't been used as the theme music for the 1970s television series The Onedin Line.

We end with Mussorgsky again, his ever-popular Pictures at an Exhibition, in Ravel's orchestration.

We are delighted to welcome back the conductor Tom Newall, a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music and more recently co-founder of the Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra, which provides playing opportunities for music students and graduates. He is also active as the Music Director for Blackburn Music Society and Leeds Youth Opera.

The venue is as usual the Evans Theatre in Wilmslow Leisure Centre, and the starting time is 7.45pm.

Tickets cost £12 (concessions £10) and can be bought at the door, or through the ticket hotline on 01925 756144, or through the Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra website.
