Tributes paid to father of three who died in Lake District crash

A father of three who coached local sport's teams has tragically died following a crash in the Lake District.

David Otway, aged 52, from Wilmslow died following a one vehicle collision, at Wrynose Pass in Little Langdale, Ambleside on Wednesday, 21st September.

Specially trained officers are supporting his family at this time.

Mum Ruth, sister Rachel, and sons Matthew, Peter, and Max, have been devastated by the loss of David. The family have released the following statement in tribute to Mr Otway:

"David was born and brought up in Kendal and is very well known in the area. He attended Stramongate School and later Kendal Grammar School.

"During the 70s and 80s he was a playing member of the under 19 Kendal Rugby Squad and grew up through the juniors at Netherfield Cricket Club through to the first team.

"His work for the Netherfield club continued when he left this area in many ways, particularly arranging and looking after the professionals who played at the club.

"He was a member of MCC committees locally and nationally. And continued his work over the last few years as coach and manager of the very successful Alderley Edge Junior teams where his younger son Max played."

The family have received many tributes about the part David played in their lives and are very appreciative of this support.

Ex-England cricket captain Michael Vaughan tweeted "Such a tragic loss... David Otway will be remembered for inspiring so many youngsters at Alderley Edge CC."

Wilmslow Rugby Club tweeted "It is with greatest sadness we must announce the tragic death of a great man, David Otway. Our thoughts are with his family."

David Otway's funeral will take place on Wednesday 5th October at 1pm at St Mark's Church, Natland, Kendal LA9 7QL and afterwards at Netherfield Cricket Club, Parkside Road, Kendal, LA9 7BL.
