The Dogfather: Is your dog really under control?

I sent Cobra my fast eager Labrador out for a long retrieve this morning. He went off at full speed and was about 100 meters away when an unaccompanied Doberman appeared out of nowhere and took chase.

I blew my stop whistle and Cobra hit the ground. The Doberman caught up with him but had no idea what was going on. There is no fun in chasing a dog lying down. The Doberman circled a couple of times then went off in search of a more exciting target. Cobra's swift response to my stop whistle saved him from a certain attack.

Having good control of your dog can prevent all kind of incidents. Tally, my little yellow Lab bitch was swimming after a ball in the river, when I realised there was a fast-flowing weir ahead. I hit the recall whistle and Tally turned back and swam to the bank. I don't know where the current would have taken her and I did not want to find out.

Unfortunately it takes time to train your dog to respond to your commands especially in tempting outdoor environments where there are so many distractions and most dog owners just don't have time for weekly classes. Work, and family commitments often won't allow for that kind of commitment.

If you are one of those dog owners I have the answer : On Saturday/ Sunday Sept 17/18 I have a two-day Master Class where I have my training team on hand to give you intensive one-on-one tuition with your dog.

I only take a maximum of 15 dogs, which gives us lots of time to spend with individual dogs. So if you have been meaning attend a dog training class but have never been able to find the time my Master Class will solve your problem.

It is basically a two-month training schedule condensed into one weekend.

You will find full details on my website or you can text me direct on 07590-560012.
