Residents compile history of Handforth goods traffic

Local residents have contributed over 125 years local knowledge to another display to help celebrate the Friends of Handforth Station's 20th anniversary.

Bill Shenton, a resident of Handforth for 83 years has provided a large aerial photograph taken in the early 1950's of the rail sidings (which included stabling for the Royal Train) and the surrounding area.

Mike Bishop, of Friends of Handforth Station, said "Bill has an amazing memory of people and places shown on the photograph and was happy to talk about these and supplied more information and explanations to accompany the aerial photographs which are included in the display."

Paul Teather, another local resident for over 30 years wrote all the other information based on research for a book to be published titled "The Industrial Railways and Locomotives of Cheshire".

Mike added "He also provided photographs to complete the display. However he found in his research that whilst several photographs were taken of the sidings alongside the main line north of Handforth none have yet been traced of the Air Ministry lines or locomotives within the depot.

"Their locomotives worked traffic from and to the main line, crossing Spath Lane footpath and are remembered by local residents and we would be very interested to hear of photographs and memories of any sort from the 1950s."
